ALL ABOUT THE SUNFLOWER KENNEL CLUB
HISTORY

The Sunflower Kennel Club of Olathe, KS Inc. is a non-profit corporation whose members are active in the dog fancy. The Club was formed in 1983, incorporated in 1988 and licensed by the American Kennel Club in 1994. The membership roster has grown from a mere handful to close to 150 individuals today.

MEETINGS

The SKC meets the second Monday of each month. Currently, the meetings begin at 7:15 p.m. and are held at the Soroptimist Community Center, 6219 Martway, Mission, KS. On a semi-regular basis there are dog-related programs presented before the formal meeting. The election of Club officers is held annually at the June meeting. On occasion, the Club conducts dinner meetings at area restaurants. Guests are encouraged to call prior to the meeting date to confirm the location.

SHOWS

Sunflower presents back-to-back AKC-licensed all-breed dog shows and obedience trials around the last weekend in September. They are currently held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner, KS.

CLASSES

The Club sponsors dog training classes in Puppy Socialization, Beginner Obedience, Novice Obedience (designed for trial competitors) and Show Conformation. Each session lasts eight weeks, with each class running forty-five minutes, one night a week. There are four sessions throughout the year. At the present time, classes are on Thursday nights at the Soroptimist Community Center, 6219 Martway, Mission, KS.

HEALTH CLINICS

A number of clinics are presented each year to test dogs for inherited diseases: a CERF eye clinic to check for Progressive Retinal Atrophy and a Von Willebrand's Disease clinic to look for bleeding disorders.

SANCTIONED MATCH

A B-OB matche is held on the last Sunday in January, primarily as a practice for novice handlers and also for experienced exhibitors bringing out a new puppy. At present, the matches take place at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner, KS.
